Prime Minister Miloš Vučević expressed his satisfaction today that he had his first official meeting as Prime Minister, the day before the biggest and most joyous Christian holiday, with His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije.
Vučević pointed out that after a substantive conversation, he asked His Holiness for a blessing to perform one of the most responsible functions in the state.
With a father's blessing, Patriarch Porfirije gave me the icon of Saint Sava, the father of Serbian spirituality, the first and greatest Serbian enlightener, the founder of our Church, a symbol of the unity of the Church, the state and the people, with the message that we should walk in his footsteps and build the unity that is essential and necessary for all, the Prime Minister stated.
He assessed that the Serbian Orthodox Church is one of the most important institutions of the Serbian people and that it preserved the national consciousness during centuries of slavery, built identity to a great degree, remained even in those regions where the prerogative of the state authority did not exist, preserved the people and suffered together with them.
Vučević added that, bearing in mind all the difficulties and temptations that the current historical moment brings, he believes that it would be responsible to improve the cooperation between the Church and the state, based on our historical experience and on the model of cooperative separation.
