Speaking at a press conference following the signing of the memorandum, Director of the Water Management Directorate Nikola Marjanovic said that the essential purpose of the memorandum is an improvement of water resources protection and quality of service for consumers, with the aim of increasing efficiency, reducing losses and attaining international standards.
Marjanovic explained that the Water Management Directorate will offer assistance at state level in improving cooperation between public utility services and relevant ministries, while the Serbia-Montenegrin Waterworks and Sewerage Company will participate in drafting laws and regulations in the sector of public waterworks and sewerage.
According to Marjanovic, it is Serbia's duty to introduce European standards in conveying and treating wastewaters, as well as producing and supplying drinking water, since these processes represent one of the preconditions for European integration.
Marjanovic said that Serbia is one of 14 European countries which use water from the Danube and pointed at the necessity of synchronising efforts, especially when it comes to wastewater treatment. Belgrade alone disposes of six cubic metres of wastewater per second and it all ends up in the Danube, concluded Marjanovic.
