A charity night occasioned for the Hilandar monastery was hosted last night in Bridgewater House, London, by the Friends of Mount Athos. Hilandar, a Serbian monastery on the Mount Athos in Greece, was seized in a devastating fire of March 4.
Serbia-Montenegrin Ambassador to London Vladeta Jankovic gave a lecture entitled “Hilandar: Before and After the Fire”, illustrated by photographs and slides, the BBC reported.
Among the present was Prince Charles, who had visited Hilandar on several occasions. The Prince addressed the gathering and said that the fire in Hilandar was a tragedy for the world’s cultural heritage, and added that it was the duty of every aesthete and spiritual man to help the reconstruction of this monastery.
The Prince of Wales has already donated for the Hilandar. He also promised to try to engage some serious donors who would return the monastery’s once beauty and splendour in shortest time possible.
According to Ambassador Jankovic, at least £500,000 was gathered for Hilandar’s restoration, adding that the Serbian-Greek Friendship Society announced a donor dinner for Hilandar scheduled to take place in the London Claridges hotel in June. That will be an occasion to increase the funds for the monastery’s restoration, Jankovic concluded.
