Miroljub Labus
In an interview to the Tanjug news agency, Labus said that 2005 will be remembered as the year in which the country and its people regained self-confidence thanks mainly to the initiation of talks with the EU, continuation of economic, social and legal reforms, and highly commendable reviews from the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
He recalled that thanks to an agreement reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), debt worth $700 million to the Paris Club of Creditors has been written off this year, and that the country has also seen improvement in its international credit rating.
Labus pointed out that the sector of public finance has been consolidated, and that for the first time Serbia has a surplus instead of a deficit in its budget. He also mentioned the start of a new investment cycle.
The Serbian deputy prime minister said that in 2005 Serbia has received a total of nearly $2 billion of foreign direct investment, which is a significant increase compared to last year. Also, Labus said, 2005 has been the year in which the formation of the team for significant talks on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija has occurred.
Labus pointed out that Serbia will be faced with three important issues in 2006, namely the continuation of talks with the EU, negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija and resolution of relations with Montenegro.
The next year should also see the completion of the country's obligations towards the Hague tribunal, reformation of the judiciary and adoption of a new constitution, said Labus and warned that postponing decisions can be of no use whatsoever.
