US support to Serbia in process of energy transition

Belgrade/Bucharest, 23 May 2022

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic talked today in Bucharest with US Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk about cooperation in the energy transition process, building energy infrastructure, regional connections, exchange of experiences and technology.

At the meeting on the sidelines of the round table on energy security organised by the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P-TECC), Mihajlovic said that Serbia's goal is to redefine the energy mix, since today it receives nearly 70% of energy from lignite-fired thermal power plants.

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that Serbia is taking steps to reduce dependence in the gas sector and diversify suppliers, and that it must quickly connect with the region.

The officials discussed Serbia's participation in all working groups within the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation and the initiative to establish a working group for women in energy.

Turk said that the United States wants to discuss plans for the development of the energy sector in Serbia, adding that he agreed that the cooperation agreement would facilitate cooperation in all fields – from the exchange of knowledge and technology, to direct joint projects.
