Significant progress made in managing migrant crisis

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic pointed out today, in a meeting with Head of the UNHCR Office in Serbia Francesca Bonelli, that, thanks to long-term cooperation with this organisation on migration, significant progress has been made in protecting human rights and managing the migrant crisis, noting that the situation in our country is stable.

Speaking about the Regional Housing Programme for Refugees from the Former Yugoslavia, Brnabic especially emphasised the contribution and assistance of the UNHCR, since the stabilisation of the situation in the region depends on the long-term solution of these issues and is an example of good practice in the region.

She emphasised that she is extremely proud that this year the regional award given by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for exceptional contribution in helping refugees, displaced persons and stateless people was awarded to a representative from Serbia for the first time.

The head of the UNHCR pointed out that she witnessed solidarity, support and a well-coordinated response to the migrant crisis in Serbia, especially when it comes to vulnerable groups.

She stated that an exceptional effort has been made when it comes to the integration of people who want to stay and live in Serbia, emphasising that migrant children have access to all levels of education, and that she is especially proud of the fact that this year, for the first time, faculties in Serbia also enroll refugees who are not from the region.

Also, Bonelli praised the fact that Serbia, as one of the first countries, started vaccinating migrants.
