On the occasion, Simovic pointed out that this fair and the exhibited books are an opportunity for every person that does not read books to finally start reading them, and thus become a winner in life.
On behalf of Great Britain, this year’s guest of honour at the fair, British author of Serbian origin Vesna Goldsworthy addressed the visitors.
“In moments such as this, in these halls where I had strolled for hours as a child with my parents each October, I truly feel at home. Here and now my two home countries stand together”, said Goldsworthy.
At the official opening, a short documentary was played on a video beam showing the book fair’s half-century of history, and a short overview of British literature.
About 700 home and 200 foreign exhibitors will take part in this year’s fair.
Guests at the fair will be publishers from Switzerland, Spain, the USA, Greece, Italy, Japan, Iran, Israel, Canada, France, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. For Brazil, Angola, Portugal, Russia, Belarus and the Netherlands this 50th fair will the first Belgrade Book Fair they will take part in.
