Speaking at a press conference held at the Institute of Immunology and Virology “Torlak”, Milosavljevic said that 300,000 doses of the vaccine will be administered and expenses will be covered by the government’s Health Insurance Fund. He added that vaccines have also been procured for sale to the general public in pharmacies.
According to Milosavljevic, 227,000 vaccines passed through the quality control tests of the Serbian Agency for Medical Products and all vaccines will be tested by November 10.
Milosavljevic recalled that a sum of €3 million from a loan of the European Investment Bank will be used for modernising the facility for producing the polio vaccine in “Torlak”, while an additional sum of €1 million will be redirected from the World Bank loan towards procuring equipment and adapting space for producing the vaccine against avian-flu.
He said that with this investment, “Torlak” will be able to produce 500,000 doses of the vaccine by 2006 and will become a supplier to the entire region, adding that it is expected that in the forthcoming year this institute will be returned the certificate given by the World Health Organisation, which it lost in 1992.
