Serbian industry shows resilience in times of crisis

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic chaired today a session of the Council for coordination of activities and measures for gross domestic product (GDP) growth, at which the most relevant economic indicators in all industries in the first quarter of this year were analysed.

The drop in GDP in January stood at around one percent, which is an excellent result, given that in January last year a growth of over seven percent was recorded and that by the end of 2021 a growth of six percent is expected, it was assessed at the session.

Members of the Council underlined that the Serbian industry has proved to be resilient in the times of crisis, which is the result of its ability to adapt to the newly-emerged situation and that is why the projections for the GDP growth for this year do not seem unattainable. Exports have not diminished, but all still depends on the course of the epidemic.

Trends and wages in the economy are stable and optimism prevails in the light of the course of immunisation of the population against the infectious disease COVID-19.

In the sector of road and railway infrastructure the works go as planned, there are no projects at a standstill regardless of the existing problems, and when it comes to energy, the Prime Minister welcomed inviting a tender for the Serbia-Bulgaria gas interconnection.

Inviting tenders for gas pipelines to Serbia, Romania and Croatia is also planned, as well as a new investment plan for the construction of solar power plants.

Members of the Council informed Brnabic about the progress on the realisation of projects whose beginning is planned for the current year, such as the Novi Sad-Ruma fast road (Fruska Gora Corridor), a section of the fast road from Novi Sad to Kelebija, sections of the roads from Nis to Merdare and from New Belgrade to Surcin, as well as about the projects whose completion is planned for this year.

The realisation of projects in the field of environmental protection, especially the construction of wastewater treatment plants and sewage network also goes as planned and in 17 municipalities in Serbia everything is ready for the beginning of construction of these facilities.

As for Belgrade, in addition to the realisation of the projects launched, starting new ones is considered, such as the construction of a tunnel from Karadjordjeva Street to Despota Stefana Street and a bridge on Ada Huja.
