Government aims at creating economy based on knowledge, innovation

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated tonight that investments in the field of innovation provide greater economic growth and a better quality of life for citizens.

Opening the Third Innovation Week, Brnabic pointed out that innovations also contribute to one of the goals of the government, which is creating an economy based on knowledge and innovations.

The goal of the government is the transformation of the Serbian economy in which growth based on investments would grow into growth based on innovations, creativity and added value, the Prime Minister said, adding that this is a way for Serbia to grow and progress at a much faster rate than before.

She emphasised that Serbia wants to position itself as a regional leader and lay the foundations for continuous improvements, and that is why the government is investing approximately 90 million euros in programmes planned by the Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy.

According to her, the Strategy was adopted at the end of December 2019, which made Serbia the first country in Southeast Europe and the 26th in the world to have such a document.

Brnabic recalled that the government has done a lot in the last four years in the field of investments in infrastructure for the development of innovations and research, startup companies and science, which exceed 100 million euros.

It is important to encourage young people and enable them not to be afraid to innovate, to start companies in which they can do science and research, and that is why the key component is education reform, Brnabic underlined.

We want it to be a driving force of development, reform and growth, the Prime Minister said, adding that the establishment of the National Science Fund will also contribute to that.

Brnabic also recalled that IT is the fastest growing sector in Serbia, whose annual growth is more than 20 percent, and even at the time of the pandemic it was 4.5 percent.

Ambassador of Finland to Serbia Kimmo Lahdevirta stated that Finland strives for the development of artificial intelligence to be based on trust and focused on people, with a focus on efficient application in the field of business and public services.
