Government to set aside €3m for Belo Brdo archaeological site

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated today after visiting the Belo Brdo archaeological site in Vinca together with US Ambassador to Serbia Anthony Godfrey that the Serbian government decided to declare this site a capital project of exceptional importance.

Brnabic said that in the coming years around €3 million will be invested in the site and that the Ambassador’s fund for the protection of cultural heritage provided $475,000 for the rehabilitation of landslide at the site.

Belo Brdo is one of the most important archaeological sites globally, but no one could guess that is the case because we are not used to protecting our cultural heritage, and therefore the world heritage either, the Prime Minister said and added that that is one of the things we are determined to change.

She underlined that she is happy that the Serbian government decided to declare the Vinca-Belo Brdo site a capital project of exceptional importance, which will be renovated and be preserved systematically, but also promoted internationally.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Ambassador’s fund because it chose to set aside a considerable sum for the landslide rehabilitation, which also has political importance bearing in mind that this is the biggest support of that fund in 20 years and one of the 10 projects in the world for which funds have been set aside.

She said that the priority now is to make technical documentation for landslide rehabilitation.

Godfrey said that Serbia is very important for the United States of America and that he is proud of the relations that are being developed.

This place is important not only for Serbia and the United States, but for the whole world too, Godfrey underlined.

The multilayered archaeological site Vinca-Belo Brdo is located 15 kilometres downstream from the Belgrade city centre, in the suburban neighbourhood of Vinca. Remains of an ancient culture are located right next to the Danube river bank, on a hill, ideal for maintaining unparalled artistic items.

The archaeological site spans 25 acres and includes the remains of probably the oldest Neolithic civilisation in Europe that flourished from c. 6200 BC to c. 4500 BC.
