Support of World Bank in field of environmental protection

Brnabic and Lvovsky discussed possibilities for cooperation with the World Bank and the ways in which this financial institution could help Serbia to solve the problem of air and water pollution and waste management.
Brnabic underlined that environmental protection is becoming one of the most important challenges of our country and that progress in this field is an important segment of social development.
The negotiation position for Chapter 27 which deals with the environment, has been submitted to the European Commission, the Prime Minister explained and added that a challenging and long-term process of implementation of laws and regulations in this field is ahead of Serbia.
World Bank representatives underlined that the use of renewable energy sources and the switching over to biomass as the main source of energy are key, as well as cooperation and the inclusion of all levels of government, primarily the local self-governments, in finding the most efficient measures.
Regarding air pollution, the Prime Minister said that the Serbian government has established a special Working group that proposes the necessary measures for environmental protection and coordinates the work of the relevant state bodies in this area.
The government also adopted the National plan for the reduction of emissions of main pollutants originating from the old large combustion plants, by which it pledges to make important cuts in the emission of pollutants from large thermal power plants.
