Serbia in favour of realisation of UNECO values, goals

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic announced today that media and information literacy is becoming literacy for life in the digital age, as it seeks to empower citizens to respond to social, economic and environmental challenges and actively contribute to the overall progress of society.

In a speech he gave at the opening of the International Consultative Meeting on Media and Information Literacy in Belgrade, Dacic said that Serbia attaches great importance to UNESCO's activities in the field of protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, natural and documentary heritage, and to the promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions and it strongly supports UNESCO’s priorities -Africa and gender equality, as well as the youth, education and culture.

In the modern world of globalisation and digitalisation, when everything seems to be at our fingertips, we are confronted, paradoxically, with an increase in conflict and misunderstanding, extremism, discrimination, Dacic underlined.

Given that ignorance breeds prejudice, and prejudice conflicts, it is important to pay extra attention to literacy and education as a prevention of any form of intolerance, the Prime Minister said and assessed that for that reason the mission of UNESCO is today more than ever before, nationally and globally.
