Clear support of Visegrad Group to European prospects of Western Balkans

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stressed today that the Visegrad Four, whose members like Hungary and Poland have been nominated for significant positions within the new European Commission, have given a lot of support to the European enlargement agenda.

Brnabic said in a statement to Serbian journalists in Prague, after a working meeting with the leaders of Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, which also featured the prime ministers of the countries of the Western Balkans that this is the crucial European Commission that must contribute that Serbia and Montenegro reach the very door of the European Union.

Whether that will be 2025 will depend on our reforms as well, but the European Union and its Member States need to give a much clearer signal to Serbia and the entire region that enlargement is indeed on the agenda, that we will not just open one or two chapters more if we are already ready for much more, the Prime Minister said.

She assessed that the meeting of the Visegrad Four with the prime ministers of the Western Balkans was very good and useful and expressed her gratitude to the Chairman, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, and to other leaders of the group for organising the event.

We have a big support for the EU enlargement agenda and the working meeting is coming at the right time. The Visegrad Four countries have gained significant positions within the new European Commission, the Prime Minister reiterated.

If approved by the European Parliament, Hungry will most likely have an Enlargement Commissioner, Poland will have an Agriculture Commissioner and even two European Commission Vice-Presidents, Brnabic noted, adding that the Visegrad Four will also make an official announcement that the Union should continue and accelerate enlargement in the most concrete way.

Brnabic explained that this means that Serbia and Montenegro will open chapters faster, with Albania and North Macedonia getting the green light in October to begin negotiations.

They all agreed that the situation with Bosnia-Herzegovina is the most complex, she said and added that the leaders of the two regions also discussed infrastructure projects, development projects, environment, migration and security.
