Brnabic attends marking of 75th anniversary of liberation of Luxembourg

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic attended today, at the Cultural Centre in Luxembourg, the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Luxembourg City in World War II.

Brnabic was greeted by Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg Mayor Lydie Polfer and President of the Chamber of Deputies Fernand Etgen.

On the eve of the ceremony, Brnabic said that she was extremely honoured with the invitation to attend the event and evaluated it as an extremely important signal, but also a recognition to Serbia and its fight against fascism.

Thank you on behalf of the people of Serbia for remembering our victims in the First and Second World War. That means a lot to us, she said.

At the ceremony, which began with the playing of the anthem of Luxembourg and ended with Ode to Joy, Bettel greeted the Prime Minister of Serbia and stated that she comes from a country where freedom is not taken for granted and which had many casualties during World War II.

We did not take part in the events in the past, but we are deciding what will happen in the future. It is our duty to protect the values that connect us, he underlined.

According to Bettel, it is the duty of today's politicians to fight against people who refuse to acknowledge what happened during World War II.

Our country passed through hell. The war was brought to us by the people and political forces, but today I see people who still refuse to acknowledge what happened and spread Nazi propaganda, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg said.

I say, if you have been in Auschwitz once, you will come back as a different person because the people who lost their lives there did nothing wrong, he said.

After the ceremony, Brnabic visited the exhibition of photographs from 1944, which show in the best way what happened then.

The liberation of Luxembourg City in World War II lasted from 5-13 September, and that city today remembers 10 September 1944 when the first U.S. tanks from the Fifth Division entered the city.
