European integration strategic priority of Serbia

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said late today that European integration is our strategic priority and that we understand that our journey towards the European Union, reforms, changing society, the economy, administration, ourselves, is equally important, if not sometimes more important, than the goal itself.

During her address at the conference "Talking about Europe - Building Bridges", organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Novi Sad, Brnabic underlined that Serbia has many potentials.

Unfortunately, we also have many open regional issues. Emotional, complex issues, which are not as of today or yesterday, are not even a decade or two old, but some of them are centuries old - delayed to be placed on the agenda for years and decades. I am convinced that closing these questions would mean the opening of new prospects for all in the Balkans, the Prime Minister said.

She called on EU partners to help Serbia restore collapsed bridges between us and find the way together to build new and more modern ties with one another, with Europe and the whole world.

Brnabic recalled that Serbia has so far opened 16 and temporarily closed two chapters and underlined that reforms are being implemented, first of all, for the sake of ourselves.

According to her, Serbia is committed to further strengthening the legislative framework, the rule of law and the regulation of the situation in all areas.

Speaking about economic aspects of integration, she underlined that the EU is by far the largest investor and foreign trade partner of Serbia, since about two thirds of our foreign trade is done with the EU, while two thirds of all foreign investments in Serbia come from the EU.

Head of National Programmes Team at Konrad Adenauer Foundation for Serbia and Montenegro Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes pointed out that Serbia is an important point in the Balkans and Europe.

Building bridges is important for Novi Sad, the city that is the European Youth Capital this year, and in 2021 it will be the European capital of culture. Bridges connect people, the past and the present, but we do not want to live in the past, we want to think about the future, he concluded.
