Serbian Minister of Justice Zoran Stojkovic opened a new building for housing inmates in the Penitentiary-Reformatory Centre in Cuprija. With 800 square metres, the building can hold 80 people, and the construction, financed by the Serbian Ministry of Justice, cost 10.5 million dinars.

At the conference following the opening of the building, Stojkovic pointed out that conditions in Serbian prisons were very poor, whereas the situation is now considerably better. “I say that with pride, because with such little means as we had, we have managed to provide what was needed and to come closer to fulfilling the Feasibility study”, the Minister said.
The object increases the capacity of Cuprija Penitentiary by 50 percent, which will enable the transfer of inmates sentenced to shorter terms, from large prisons such as Sremska Mitrovica, Zabela and Nis, thus reducing the number of inmates and bringing it in accordance with the EU standards, Stojkovic said.
He added that Serbia is on the right way to achieving required standards, as demanded by the EU, which will be accomplished through changes in current regulations.
