Prime Minister Ana Brnabic spoke today at Oxford Union, the largest debating association at Oxford University known for the organisation of debates since 1823.
Speaking on the topic "The Future of Serbia in Europe", Brnabic said that Serbia wants to become a member of the European Union (EU) because it believes that the values our country stands for are in accordance with those of the EU.
We share the same values with the EU and I think that Serbia’s place is in the EU, Brnabic stated.
The Prime Minister noted that many countries are at different stages of EU accession and that internal reforms are the most important, primarily for our own sake.
Brnabic stressed that the focus of the Serbian government are citizens and their better quality of life, better pensions and wages and a higher standard of living.
The formal membership in the EU will come as a result of the reforms we are implementing and this is the only true path towards full membership in the EU. The reforms implemented by the Serbian government have a direct impact on the economic and political stability of the country, she said.
Prime Minister Brnabic stressed that the government is creating a new, modern economy based on innovation and knowledge that will enable the domestic economy to be more competitive in the world.
She stated that the priorities of our foreign policy, along European integration, are regional cooperation, as well as partnership with all countries of the world, such as the United States, China, the Russian Federation, India, the United Arab Emirates, and that this remains a permanent commitment of Serbia.
Before the lecture, the Prime Minister of Serbia visited the building of the Oxford Union Association in the company of President of the Association Stephen Horvath.
On this occasion, Brnabic signed the association's book of impressions, where she thanked for the opportunity to present at Oxford Union all the achievements and plans of Serbia.
Previously Brnabic was the keynote speaker at the Challenges of Government Conference 2018 of the Blavatnik School of Governance at the University of Oxford, where she spoke about the importance that technology revolution has for the future of governments.
