First Serbian film festival opens in Paris

Belgrade / Paris, 9 June 2005

The oldest preserved Serbian film “King Petar I Karadjordjevic’s Coronation”, filmed in 1904 and restored in 1992, opened the first Serbian film festival in Paris last night.

Festival president Miki Manojlovic addressed the audience at the opening night and said that the festival is an opportunity for the French audience to get to know Serbian cinematography and directors who have paved the way for a new generation of filmmakers – from Zivojin Pavlovic, Dusan Makavejev and Aleksandar Petrovic to Goran Paskaljevic, Emir Kusturica, Goran Markovic and Srdjan Karanovic.

The festival will also take a retrospective look at Serbian cinematography and films by Goran Paskaljevic.

Organised by “Balkan Slav Spirit”, the society that promotes Serbian culture in France, the festival was financially backed by the French Ministry of Culture, French National Cinematography Centre, the Serbian Ministry of Diaspora, Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Services, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belgrade City Hall and the Yugoslav Film Library.
