Solving issue of Kosovo-Metohija important for future of Serbia

Belgrade/New York, 27 September 2018

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic met in New York with Swiss President Alain Berset last night and concluded that Serbia is committed to continuing the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

Brnabic estimated that this is a difficult process and requires a lot of time and patience.

The Prime Minister pointed out that Serbia has carried out significant political and economic reforms, and resolving the issue of Kosovo-Metohija is especially important for the future of Serbia.

Brnabic reminded that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, as Prime Minister, initiated the process of normalizing relations with Pristina, and thereby, although criticized in the country, showed leadership and political responsibility for the future of Serbia.

She stressed that the implementation of the Brussels Agreement is very important for Serbia.

The key problem is that Pristina has not done anything to implement the Brussels Agreement, while Belgrade has completed all of the obligations. Although this additionally aggravates the dialogue and normalization of relations, we do not give up on dialogue, and we consider that compromise is the only solution that is acceptable in the long run for both sides, said Brnabic.

She added that it is important that we do not leave a frozen conflict to future generations.

The Prime Minister presented the most important results of economic reforms and reforms in the field of education.

Brnabic stressed that the Swiss model of dual education is a good example for Serbia and that, by adopting legal solutions, we created the conditions for dual education to come to life in Serbia at a higher capacity.

The Swiss model offers solutions that can be applied in Serbia as well.

It is important that for the first time we create the basis for better linking of education and economy, said the Prime Minister.

Brnabic thanked for the support provided by the government of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to Serbia, and especially the support to the SIPR team currently working with the Cabinet of the Prime Minister and dealing with issues of poverty reduction and social inclusion.

Brnabic and Berset also discussed digitization as a matter that is among the priorities of both countries.

Brnabic pointed out that Digital Serbia, with which the government cooperates on several important projects, primarily in the field of creating a legal environment for strengthening the IT industry, digitization and education, was founded in Zurich, with the help of Digital Switzerland, which is another connection of the two countries.
