Prime Minister Ana Brnabic spoke today with the President of the European Research Council (ERC), Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, about the possibilities for Serbian scientists to obtain maximum funding for their research.

Financial support of ERC to scientists in Serbia

The European Research Council (ERC) has a total budget of €13 billion that it invests in scientific projects and has so far supported two projects in Serbia. The ERC is part of the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Program, which supports top-notch research.
The Prime Minister stressed that the government's priorities are the development of education, science and technology.
She said that our scientists can satisfy the only criterion set for obtaining financial resources from the Council, which is scientific excellence. She underlined that with the foundation of the Science Fund, we will establish a competitive way for financing science in Serbia.
Brnabic highlighted as one of the key goals of the government the connection between science and economy in Serbia, and at the same time pointed to the importance of forming the Western Balkans Research Foundation, which would support the most talented young researchers in the region.
This would, as she said, give an incentive for the best scientists to stay in their own country.
Bourguignon estimated that Serbia has great scientific potential and that a new era of science financing has emerged, which relies on three main pillars - excellence in science, industry leadership and social challenges.
According to him, the focus should be placed on the areas with less developed scientific infrastructures, towards industry and the private sector, which would be given a chance to apply for grants from the European Research Council.
He also supported the idea to establishing a regional ERC office for donations, which would provide all the necessary assistance in the process of application to researchers from the region.
