Cooperation with Bulgaria in fields of energy, infrastructure important

Belgrade/Sofia, 7 July 2018

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic met today in Sofia with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to discuss strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The prime ministers of Serbia and Bulgaria first held a bilateral meeting on the eve of the opening of the seventh Summit of China and 16 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, held today in Sofia.

Brnabic and Borisov assessed that the political and economic relations of the two neighbours are constantly improving, and cooperation in the field of trade, infrastructure and energy is especially important.

The volume of trade between Serbia and Bulgaria in 2017 reached a record €1 billion, of which the Serbian export amounted to almost €590 million, while the cooperation between Serbia and Bulgaria was particularly intensified in the field of energy.

Brnabic pointed out that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the project for the construction of the gas interconnector Bulgaria-Serbia is particularly significant.

The construction of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad gas pipeline is one of the priority projects for Serbia, which will provide the sources and security of supply of our country and Bulgaria, Brnabic pointed out.

Brnabic and Borisov talked about current infrastructure projects.

The construction of the eastern arm of the Corridor 10 should be completed by the end of the year, while the modernization of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway line should start at the end of this or early 2019, which will enable better connectivity between the two countries.

The Prime Minister of Serbia thanked the Bulgarian Prime Minister that the EU enlargement was again put on the agenda of the Union.

We are grateful for Bulgaria's strong commitment that this issue be among the priorities of its chairmanship of the Council of the EU, which has just been successfully concluded, Brnabic said.

Brnabic and Borisov also discussed the issues of national minorities.

The Prime Minister of Serbia said that our country has provided the highest European standards for the protection of the rights of members of all national minorities, including the Bulgarian minority.
