At the international scientific conference "Kosovo and Metohija: Sui generis or the precedent in international relations", Brnabic pointed out that the conflict between the Serbian and Albanian peoples cannot be solved by supporting every request of one side, no matter how unreasonable it might be, and expecting the other side to bow their head and agree to any solution imposed.
No mature people would accept something like that, especially the Serbian people who in the past was paying its freedom and the right to decide very dearly.
The Prime Minister underlined that the solution must take into account the positions of both peoples, and noted that the so-called Republic of Kosovo project has been and is doomed to failure.
As the current situation is unsustainable, it is necessary to search for some new, possibly unique solutions, in order to establish lasting stability and peace in this part of Europe, she stressed.
Brnabic expressed her conviction that this is possible if the most influential entities in the international community have an interest in achieving such an outcome.
The Prime Minister recalled that the decision of the parliament in Pristina on proclaiming the secession of that part of Serbia was made without a referendum for citizens of Serbia, or at least for the inhabitants of the province of Kosovo-Metohija.
The secession was carried out against the will of the Serbian people, directly violating the Serbian Constitution and contrary to the legally binding UN Resolution 1244 on Kosovo-Metohija, she pointed out.
Brnabic said that this was done at the time of peace, when Serbia was a well-established and renowned member of the international community, the UN and the Council of Europe, and in pre-accession talks with the EU.
Speaking about the number of displaced Serbs, she said that more than 50,000 Serbs used to live in Pristina and today there are only 37.
The Prime Minister added that the Serbian cemeteries are being demolished, the property is usurped, and our compatriots are exposed to various forms of ethnically motivated violence on a daily basis.
The "Kosovo-Metohija: Sui Generis or the precedent in international relations" conference has been organised by the Office for Kosovo-Metohija and the Belgrade Institute for International Politics and the Economy.
