"On behalf of the Serbian government and in my own name, I wish citizens of Serbia happy Statehood Day, proud of the Sretenje Constitution, whose adoption in 1835 laid the foundations of a modern Serbian state.
The spirit of that constitution had provided the basis for building a country based on the values of freedom, justice and tolerance, which are important for any society that wants to make progress.
Following these principles, European future is our priority today. We are persistent in resolving issues of state and national interest and we are committed to strengthening cooperation in the region.
Recalling the First Serbian Uprising, which opened the way to liberation, we mark the Statehood Day as a memorial to our famous ancestors. We today live in their vision of a free and modern state, aware of the responsibility that we must keep it alive together," reads the greeting letter of the Prime Minister.
