The results of the first phase of the three-dimensional laser scanning, performed on behalf of the Serbian Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Monuments by the Vekom firm from Belgrade, were presented at a press conference. Minister Kojadinovic said that the Ministry of Culture shows its concern for the Hilandar Monastery through this project, and that it is an attempt to use the latest technology to record the state of the monastery complex on the Athos Peninsula in Greece.
Assistant Minister of Culture Miladin Lukic said that the tragedy that struck this monastery forced the ministry to re-examine what was done in the Hilandar Monastery in the last few decades.
Lukic pointed out that the monastery has never been systematically recorded according to conservation norms in a way that would enable an absolutely accurate reconstruction. He added that the Vekom firm has carried out the most detailed possible scanning of the site.
However, he stressed that conservation workers would have to use additional material, considering that laser scanning can reproduce only the current appearance of the Hilandar Monastery damaged in the fire.
Vekom representative Ugljesa Brankovic explained that after the laser scanning, a three-dimensional cloud of dots is computer generated, which represents an extremely accurate reconstruction.
Besides the Hilandar Monastery, Vekom has already recorded the Saint Sava Temple, the Kostolac thermal plant, the Usce business centre, the Belgrade Arena and the synagogue in Subotica.
