Importance of infrastructure projects, cross-border cooperation

Belgrade/Durres, 26 August 2017

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic is taking part today at the meeting of the prime ministers of the region in Durres, Albania, which began with a session devoted to cross-border movement and transport efficiency.

Speaking to participants, Brnabic emphasised that regional cooperation and strengthening of relations with neighbours are priorities of the government of Serbia.

Membership in the European Union is a strategic commitment of Serbia, she stressed, and reminded that our country is committed to regional cooperation and the progress of the Western Balkan region towards the EU.

Speaking about cross-border cooperation in all segments, the Prime Minister pointed out that in terms of infrastructure projects our priorities remain the Nis-Merdare-Pristina-Tirana-Durres motorway ("Motorway of Peace").

Also, she added that reconstruction and modernisation of the railroads Nis-Dimitrovgrad, Budapest-Belgrade, Belgrade-Nis and Belgrade-Bar, the bypass around Belgrade, as well as the works on the Sava and Danube, the main waterways, are also under consideration.

Participants at the first session discussed the Transport Community of South East Europe, for which the agreement was signed at the Summit on the Western Balkans recently held in Trieste.

Accordingly, Brnabic stressed that Serbia has officially submitted its candidacy for the seat of the Secretariat of the Transport Community of Southeast Europe in Belgrade.

Belgrade is an important transportation hub and has excellent connections with the whole region, she said, adding that it is time to establish an agreement on the seat of the Secretariat, which would demonstrate the whole region's determination to develop through intensifying cooperation in all areas.

The participants of the meeting were greeted by the host of the meeting, Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania Edi Rama, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and Vice-President of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia, Kiril Miller.

Also taking part in the event are representatives of the Permanent Secretariat of the Western Balkans Chambers Investment Forum (WBCIF), the first joint institution in the region established by the chambers of commerce of these countries.
