The historic decision to make Novi Sad the first city outside the EU to carry this title was made after a visit of the panel of independent experts to the city and a detailed analysis of the final application on 112 pages.
The delegation was led by Novi Sad Mayor Milos Vucevic and Chairman of the Organisation Committee for Candidacy of Novi Sad for European Capital of Culture 2021 Nemanja Milenkovic.
European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Tibor Navracsics expressed satisfaction over the fact that for the first time the capital of European culture comes from a candidate country for EU membership.
According to him, the opening of this prestigious European programme for countries wishing to become full members of the Union represents a way for their convergence and the strengthening of cultural ties with the European Union.
Congratulating Novi Sad for the successful candidacy, Navracsic said that he believes that this will enable visitors from Europe and the world to discover this city and its cultural richness, notice the diversity of European cultures and our shared values.
I am sure that this title will bring to Novi Sad a significant long-term benefits in the fields of culture, economy and society, as was the case with previous European capitals of culture, he said.
