The EANA, which marked its 80th anniversary last year, consists of the leading news agencies from 30 countries and covers a territory of 750 million people. Its main goal is to create a healthy working environment in which agencies can be independent, while respecting intellectual property rights and free access to information.
EANA president Paul Tesselaar expressed satisfaction with the fact that representatives of European news agencies have gathered in Belgrade to share their experiences and ideas at a three-day seminar titled “Principles of News Agencies – Printed and Electronic Media”.
The president of EANA stated that after a dark period for Serbia, Tanjug has returned to EANA and that this is a good start for further development.
Director of the Information Directorate of the Serbia-Montenegrin Council of Ministers Slobodan Orlic welcomed the fact that conditions for reporting in Serbia country are now equal for domestic and foreign reporters and added that the number of foreign reporters has grown to some 500, from around 70 before October 5, 2000.
According to him, until October 5, 2000, there were only 10 registered foreign news agencies reporting from Belgrade and now that number has climbed to 55.
Taking part in the seminar are French news agency AFP, Russian ITAR-TASS, German DPA, Spanish EFE, Italian ANSA, Czech CTK, Bulgarian BTA, Romanian Rompress, Greek ANA, Austrian APA, Polish PAP, Hungarian MTI, as well as additional news agencies from the Scandinavian and Baltic countries.
