First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, who is also OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, said today that the close relations between Serbia and the Russian Federation do not hamper Serbia's Chairmanship of the OSCE, the organisation which has a key monitoring role in Ukraine.
In an interview with the AP, Dacic said that close ties with Russia are certainly not a handicap for the impartiality with regard to the Ukrainian crisis, and that Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that they see it as an advantage, if used for de-escalation of the conflict.
Many have said that this will be a big challenge for us. Our role is not to take sides, but to help achieve the objectives of the OSCE in conflict areas, one of which is Ukraine, Dacic emphasised.
He pointed out that Serbia had learned lessons from the wars of the 1990's in the former Yugoslavia, which could be helpful in finding solutions for the Ukrainian crisis.
The experience that we have means that we understand the nature of the conflict and the importance of reaching a compromise before the war escalates and becomes too difficult to stop it, Dacic stated.
He pointed out that the main course of action now is to strengthen the OSCE mission in the field and at this point we do not consider other options.
Dacic added that the OSCE Mission is the only international presence in Ukraine, which makes its role even more important.
