On behalf of China, this year’s country guest of honour, writer Liu Zhenyun addressed the fair, who named his speech "The Role of Literature".
Expressing satisfaction that China is the guest of honour of the Belgrade Fair, Zhenyun stressed that this is not only the largest fair of this kind in the Balkans, but also a symbol of the culture of which all Belgrade citizens are proud, and that literature is the best way to understand a people and a nation.
The honour to officially open the Fair went to Serbian academician and poet Milosav Tesic, who noted that this Fair shows for the 59th time how broadly and in a cosmpolitan way Serbian culture is open to the cultures of other nations.
Serbian flute player Bora Dugic performed during the opening of the fair.
Exhibitions and the programme of the Book Fair will mark the following anniversaries - 200 years of the creation of the first works of Vuk Karadzic "Pismenica serbskoga jezika" (Grammar of the Serbian language) and "Slavenosrpske prostonarodne pesmarice" (Slavic Serbian folk songbooks), 150 years since the birth of the greatest Serbian comedian Branislav Nusic and 100 years since the beginning of the First World War.
