Respect for minority rights achievement of modern society

Minister of Culture and the Media Ivan Tasovac spoke with representatives of the Organising Committee of the Belgrade Pride Parade Marko Ilic and Boban Stojanovic about improving cooperation between institutions and the LGBT community and supported the holding of this event.

A statement by the Ministry of Culture and the Media says that representatives of the Organising Committee of the Belgrade Pride Parade expressed understanding for the complex situation in society, but they underlined that the respect for minority rights is the achievement of modern society and that it is necessary to create conditions for its better implementation. Minister Tasovac said that with personal example everyone should show tolerance and announced that he will give support to the LGBT community with his presence at the Pride Parade.

At the meeting it was emphasised that it is necessary to guarantee freedom of assembly and the security of participants in the Pride Parade, and it was concluded that the conditions have been met for Serbia, as a multicultural country, to acknowledge and accept all forms of diversity.

This includes raising awareness of the existence of the LGBT community and the acceptance of its members as citizens with equal rights.

It was also noted that the Ministry of Culture and the Media shall remain open for cooperation, which involves giving equal opportunity to all, including the LGBT community, to apply with their projects for financial support from the Ministry at regular public competitions, it is added in the statement.
