Vucic told CNN that he was elected to protect the interests of the country, its economic and political future and this is the reason why he does not wish to impose sanctions on Russia.
We do respect and we do support territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, including Crimea as a part of Ukraine. But you are right, we did not impose any sanctions over Russia because of many political, economic, historical and all the other reasons, Vucic said.
Asked about how difficult it would be for Serbia to preserve the position in the EU talks, Vucic noted that Serbian officials discussed this matter with their European friends.
We do our best to harmonise our legal system with European legal system, we do our best to join as many as it is possible declarations and resolutions that the European Union has already adopted, and there are small differences on the issue of not Ukraine, but on the issue of sanctions against Russia, Vucic said.
I hope that people from Europe will understand the specific situation that Serbia is facing today, particularly because of that need that I emphasised at the beginning of our discussion tonight, that we need to be very stable in the future, Vucic said and added that no one needs any more crises in the heart of Europe, no one needs any more problems, any more clashes, any more fights.
We are doing our best to be a pillar of that stability in this region, we do our best to improve our economy, we do our best to be a modern state and we do our best to join the EU in 2020, Vucic said.
Commenting on the project of the South Stream pipeline construction, Vucic noted that Serbia is dependable on Russian gas and noted that it is also dependable on its export to Russia, especially for agricultural products.
That is the fact that we are facing with and you know I cannot deny that, Vucic said and added that Serbia must harm itself by imposing any sanctions against Russia.
In response to the reminder that World War I began in Sarajevo, in Serbia's neighbourhood, and asked whether he is concerned about the situation in Europe now, Vucic said this is the reason that Serbia is striving for peace and doing its best to preserve its position and stand and be a pillar of stability in the region, not to cause any more problems, not to be a part of the problem but a part of the solution.
Serbia is a pillar of stability in this region and Serbia will remain the pillar of stability, Vucic said.
We do have to improve our economy, the Prime Minister said and added that Serbia will have to conduct many economic reforms.
We just passed in our parliament a new labour law, a very modern one, new privatisation law, new bankruptcy law, new set of media laws that will bring Serbia closer to EU, Vucic said and added that the government will carry out fiscal consolidation without pressures from outside to get closer to EU membership.
Serbia will be come a prosperous, economically prosperous and very modern state, Vucic told CNN.
