Kostunica said that Serbia had long needed such an institution and he explained that one of its main tasks would be to adopt a long-term social programme to address the transition process Serbia is going through.
According to Kostunica, the painful burden of transition must be distributed equally amongst all social groups and he added that this can only be achieved through a consensus on the methods of dealing with crucial social problems.
Kostunica noted that Serbian society today is faced with crucial transition tasks, namely the restructurings of large public-sector enterprises. He added that this only adds to the importance of social dialogue.
Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Policy Slobodan Lalovic told a press conference that the setting up of the Social-Economic Council should signal the beginning of a true social dialogue between social partners and the state on key issues that will take Serbia to Europe.
He explained that problems in the implementation of social policies will be resolved through agreement rather than conflicts.
The newly appointed chairman of the council, Milenko Smiljanic, said that the institution will have an initial capacity to resolve problems and prevent them from hindering Serbia’s progress.
