Jocic told a press conference today that the ministry has a difficult task to try and resolve the murders of Slavko Curuvija, Milan Pantic, Momir Gavrilovic, and Pavle Bulatovic, which he said represent a burden to the state. He added that four police teams have been set up to help the Serbian Security and Intelligence Agency (BIA) in these investigations.
Another key task for the ministry is to carry out reforms, which, according to Jocic, are not just modernisation. He said that substantial funds have been invested to modernize the ministry’s equipment over the past three years, but these (procurement) contracts will be a burden to the ministry in the years to come.
That is why a budgetary inspection visited the ministry for the first time ever, said Jocic, adding that the ministry will seek significant savings from now on.
He also said that the reform must include new legislation and added that police must be independent and free of political influence.
Speaking of the ministry’s work in the past 30 days, Jocic said that the security situation in Serbia is stable, despite an upsurge in ethnic-Albanian terrorism and the torching of mosques in Nis and Belgrade, which he said cast a shadow on otherwise peaceful and justified protests.
