At the celebration of the 206th anniversary from the First Serbian Uprising in Maricevica Jaruga, Minister of Religion Bogoljub Sijakovic called for unity and commitment to the state, whose duty is to secure peace, freedom and justice to all citizens.
Sijakovic recalled that the fight for our faith and freedom two centuries ago was the fight for all the virtues that give sense to the human life in a community, adding that this fight continues even today.
“We should cultivate our national and political ideals incessantly. A modern, collective identity implies a political ethos of freedom and justice, a democratic and legal state and economic well-being for a dignified life,” Sijakovic noted.
He extended his greetings over the Statehood Day to all who are committed to the welfare of Serbia and work hard to take care of their country, to citizens, the military, state officials and the clergy.
Minister Sijakovic, State Secretary of Defence Igor Jovicic, Arandjelovac municipal president Vlada Gajic and Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic II laid laurel wreaths at the monument to the First Serbian Uprising.

Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic II, a descendant of Duke Karadjordje who led the uprising, said it is crucial that “we bear in mind the direction we are moving in”, recalling that nothing is more important than “the values of democracy and human freedoms which Duke Karadjordje also dreamed of”.
Following the celebration in Orasac, state and military respects were paid to the Serbian rebels at St George’s Church in Oplenac and wreaths laid at Duke Karadjordje’s tomb.
Serbian President Boris Tadic laid a wreath at the monument to the Unknown Soldier on Mt Avala near Belgrade and signed the commemoration book.
“For Serbia, which is great in its deeds and its people”, the President wrote.
The day of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple was declared Serbian Statehood Day on 10 July 2001 in remembrance of 15 February 1804, when the First Serbian Uprising broke out in Orasac under the leadership of Duke Djordje Petrovic Karadjordje.
On the same day in 1835 the First Serbian Constitution was declared at the Great Assembly in Kragujevac.
