Appearing on the B92 TV show Kaziprst, Jeremic said that Serbia’s cooperation with the Hague tribunal will not be discussed at his upcoming meeting with Netherland’s Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen. He said that only Brammertz’s assessment can convince The Netherlands to change its opinion regarding the unfreezing of the transitional trade agreement between Serbia and the EU.
The Minister stressed that Belgrade plans to apply for EU candidate status soon, but a final date will be determined after consultations with European partners.
He said that it is necessary to complete the EU enlargement process in the West Balkans because only this can create conditions for lasting stability in the region, adding that EU membership continues to be the Serbian government’s top priority
Speaking about Kosovo, Jeremic said that the situation in the southern province is difficult because of organised crime, adding that Serbia will make every effort to control crime in cooperation with EULEX.
He stressed that Macedonia’s recent decision to carry out demarcation of the so-called border with Kosovo has serious implications for relations between Belgrade and Skopje, but Serbia remains committed to maintaining good relations with countries in the region.
Jeremic said that he expects that a new dialogue on the Kosovo status issue could begin after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) gives its opinion regarding the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence.
Speaking about the situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina, he said that Serbia will support any agreement reached through a compromise between all the sides concerned, reiterating that any solution which is not mutually acceptable for all sides will also be unacceptable to Serbia.
The Minister said that
his visit today to Japan is very important because it coincides with elections in Tokyo and will mark a new beginning in the relations between the two countries.
He said that he will discuss the possibility of investment in Serbia with Japanese officials.
We will also discuss Kosovo, because even though Japan has recognised Kosovo it has decided not to participate in the debate on the issue before the ICJ, said Jeremic.
