The Scotsman broke twice for a 3-0 lead in the first set. He did not lose a point on his serve until the sixth game, and by then he was 5-1 ahead and cruising.
Murray broke Djokovic yet again at the start of the second set. The 21-year-old Serb improved the serve, began finding the range with his groundstrokes and he broke Murray twice to win four games in a row.
But the world number 4 rallied from a break down at 1-4 and won 10 of the final 11 points.
Murray's win closed the gap between him and the world number-three spot, which is currently owned by Djokovic.
