Defending champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia was defeated by Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the Indian Wells final - 6-7 (5-7), 2-6.

Both players were broken twice in the opening set before the 24-year-old Russian took the tiebreak 7-5 after fifth-seeded Ivanovic netted a forehand. The Serbian broke Zvonareva in the opening game of the second and held for a 2-0 lead, but wouldn't win another game.
