Preliminary Round, Group A, Day 3
Serbia-Montenegro - New Zealand 87-90
MATCH REPORT: Sean Marks's dunk in the final seconds capped a remarkable comeback and gave New Zealand a 90-87 victory over world champions Serbia and Montenegro.
Serbia and Montenegro had a 13-point lead early in the final period but New Zealand went on a charge to tie the match at 81-81 with two minutes to play.
The teams traded three pointers and then Milos Vujanic nailed another to put his team up 87-84. Kirk Penny's hoop cut the margin to one with 20 seconds left.
But as Serbia and Montenegro tried to inbound the ball, Vujanic was called for an offensive foul, giving New Zealand the ball and a chance to go ahead.
Mark Dickel then found Marks, a forward with the San Antonio Spurs, who slammed home the winning basket. Vujanic missed a three pointer with six seconds left and then Dickel hit two free throws with three seconds to play to give the "Tall Blacks" their first win of the tournament.
"I think in the last quarter we played great both on offence and defense. Hitting a last-second shot is a great feeling," Marks said.
Serbia-Montenegro's coach Zelimir Obradovic complained bitterly about the officiating, but was just as hard on his team for giving up such a big lead.
"The referees' decision on the foul against Vujanic was unbelievable. It was a direct gift to our opponents to win the game, and I think people that watch the referees should take this into account," he said.
"I don't know if there are new rules stating that a player should be called for offensive foul when he is attacked away from the ball. And there were some strange decisions in the game against Italy as well."
