Manu Ginobili's off-balance shot left his hand just a split-second before the final buzzer, dropping through the basket to give Argentina a thrilling 83-82 victory over Serbia-Montenegro on Sunday on the first day of Olympic men's basketball.
While Argentina's players mobbed Ginobili, Serbia-Montenegro's coach protested that the shot came after the buzzer. But TV replays showed Ginobili released the ball in time.
Ginobili scored 27 points for Argentina, which avenged a defeat in the title game at the 2002 World Championships.
Ginobili scored on a drive with 16.4 seconds left and drew Vladimir Radmanovic's fifth and final foul, converting the three-point play for an 81-81 tie. Dejan Tomasevic then drew Fabricio Oberto's fifth foul on a shot attempt from the lane with 3.8 seconds left, but he made only one of two foul shots.
Argentina advanced the ball quickly, and point guard Alejandro Montecchia hit Ginobili with a pass just inside the foul line. Ginobili managed to get off a difficult shot from the right side of the lane that bounced off the glass and in.
Radmanovic led Serbia-Montenegro with 21 points, Igor Rakocevic added 19 and Dejan Bodiroga 16. Andres Nocioni, backed Ginobili with 12 points.
Argentina was inspired from the beginning, with Ginobili leading the way.
He made all four of his 3-point attempts in the first quarter, then was fouled behind the arc with 1.5 seconds left in the quarter. He made all three free throws, giving him 17 points in the quarter for a 27-15 Argentina lead.
Ginobili sat for almost eight minutes in the second quarter, and Radmanovic helped keep Serbia-Montenegro close with 12 first-half points. Argentina shot 74 percent in the half but led just 49-39.
A 9-0 run early in the third quarter pulled Serbia-Montenegro to 51-48, and a putback dunk by Radmanovic 23 seconds into the fourth quarter tied it at 61.

World and Olympic champion Hungary topped European champion Serbia and Montenegro 6-4 in the water polo tournament.
In front of a raucous full house at Olympic Aquatic Centre, the two top-ranked teams in the world played an aggressive, physical game.
Serbia and Montenegro looked strong early, turning back Hungary's normally potent offense with a tight-pressing defense and sharp goaltending.
Aleksandar Ciric of Serbia and Montenegro was ejected from the game near the end of the first period for punching Hungarian goalie, Zoltan Szecsi.
Aleksandar Sapic of Serbia and Montenegro struck first, scoring the only goal of the first period with 20 seconds remaining.
Norbert Madaras evened the score at 1-1 on Hungary's first possession of the second period, rifling in a tough long shot from 10 meters out.
Taking control of the match, Hungary went up 3-1 on unanswered goals by Tamas Kasas and Gergely Kiss.
Unable to work the ball inside or score on its man-up opportunities, Serbia and Montenegro relied on sharpshooting from beyond the 10-meter mark to stay in the game. Vladimir Vujasinovic put a shot in the corner from 10 meters out and Petar Trbojevic evened the score at 3-3 on another long shot with 1:30 remaining in the second period.
Rough play continued early in the second half, as Hungary's Tamas Molnar took a knee to the nose. When his face turned red with blood, Molnar had to be subbed out.
Serbia and Montenegro went on a three-goal run, taking the lead 4-3 on Trbojevic's second goal of the game.
Hungary struggled in the set offense and was held scoreless in the third period. Two-meter man Adam Steinmetz ended the scoring draught at 6:20 in the fourth, tying the score at 4-4. It was the turning point in the game.
A minute and a half later, as Serbia and Montenegro appeared to tire, Steinmetz earned a 4-meter penalty shot from the hole. Kiss converted, pumping his fist as he put Hungary ahead for good.
Trailing 6-4 after a breakaway goal by Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro had chances to get back in the match, but turned the ball over on a 6-on-5 opportunity with two minutes to go.
