According to the Law on President, President of the Republic is an organ of executive power which expresses the state unity of the Republic of Serbia.
The position and jurisdiction of President of the republic are defined by the Constitution and laws on defence, the army, foreign affairs, the Constitutional Court, state honours and other.
The law specifies that the government provides conditions for the work of the President, as well as necessary funds, at the proposal of the President.
Presidential elections are regulated by a special law, but this law prescribes that the President is elected trough direct voting.
The President's mandate lasts five years and begins from the day of taking oath in parliament. No one can be chosen for that function more than two times, regardless of the duration of the first and second mandate.
The dismissal of the President can be proposed in parliament by at least one-third of deputies if they believe that the President violated the Constitution. The request for dismissal is started by the majority vote in parliament.
The law stipulates that Presidential mandate cannot be ended during war or state of emergency nor within three months after that.
In case he is prevented to perform his duty, parliament speaker is in charge of replacing the President but for the period of no longer than three months.
