The committee also supported five other international environmental-related agreements important for cooperation with the EU.
Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin said that due to the postponement of ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, Serbia is already suffering harmful consequences, namely there is a lack of foreign investment.
By signing this protocol, developed countries could invest in the development of clean technologies in Serbia, which would create new jobs, the Minister said.
He said that under the agreement, Serbia would not be obliged to reduce the emission of harmful gases itself and added that countries signatories managed to reduce the warming emissions by 5.3%.
Dragin announced that the Ministry will intensively work on alignment of Serbian regulations with EU laws as well as on the environmental protection.
He announced more control and sanctioning of polluters, adding that “hot spots” such as polluters in Bor, Smederevo, Pancevo and Backi Kanal must be solved first.
The committee also supported the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, the Carpathian Convention as well as a document on estimation of effects on environment in cross-border areas.
