Serbian Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society Aleksandra Smiljanic stated in an interview with today’s edition of daily Vecernje Novosti that the prices of fixed phone impulses and postal services will not increase by the end of the year.
The government’s official website brings excerpts from the interview.
Prices of mobile services in Serbia:
“The prices of mobile services are not drastically different from the prices in our neighbourhood. We are witnessing a real market competition which came after the third mobile operator entered the market. The number of users shows whether prices are acceptable.”
Possibility of introducing another mobile operator:
“Three operators are just enough to cover our market. It is questionable whether it would pay off to the fourth operator to come to Serbia as there is a small percentage of ‘open’ users.”
IT development plans:
“We first have to implement the Law on digital signature, which is a precondition for the development of e-governance and e-operations. At the request of the EU, we will propose a bill on e-commerce by the end of the year. We will specify e-government projects which will be financed from the National Investment Plan in a move to computerise the public administration, which will reduce its expenses and increase efficiency.”
What will that bring to citizens?
“State authorities will communicate via computer network and not through regular post. We want to let our citizens do various administrative affairs on the internet and to save their time.”
Do you plan to develop wideband internet access?
“Of course. The problem is that only 1% of Serbian population has that wideband access, putting Serbia on the third place from behind in Europe. Ukraine and Albania are the only two countries behind us.”
