Regional connectivity key to greater energy system resilience

Minister of Mining and Energy in a caretaker capacity Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated today that Serbia has significantly improved its energy security over the past four years through the diversification of supply routes, despite numerous geopolitical and historical challenges.

Speaking at the BELTALKS: Belgrade Economic Talks forum, Đedović Handanović recalled that Serbian citizens did not feel the consequences of the energy crisis, and that the sanctions against NIS did not have any consequences for the citizens, nor were there any electricity cuts.

The Minister also pointed to good connectivity with the neighbours, with Serbia assisting neighbouring countries with electricity deliveries in crisis situations.

Đedović Handanović emphasised that the energy security of any country cannot be based solely on its own capacities, but also depends on connections with neighbours and the functioning of the regional and European markets.

She also stated that we have lifted the moratorium on the construction of nuclear power plants, which has opened the possibility for nuclear energy to become part of the future energy mix, and we plan to complete the first phase of the nuclear programme in mid-2027.

Đedović Handanović recalled that a large part of negotiations with the World Bank on financing the new gas programme have been completed, that Serbia is working on further strengthening the electricity corridors with neighbouring countries, that work on the gas interconnection with North Macedonia will soon begin, and that work is also underway on the connection with Romania.

She underlined that Serbia also wants to get connected to the European energy market more quickly and that our goal is to be ready for the connection in 2028.

At the same time, together with Greece, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, we are developing a regional initiative which gathers operators of transmission and transportation systems for electricity and gas, the Minister said.

When it comes to cooperation with the United States, she pointed to the potential of the Đerdap 3 reversible hydroelectric power plant project, which would be important not only for Serbia, but also for the energy security of the entire region.

This project provides an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation with Romania and develop strategic relations with the United States, given that Đerdap 3 has the potential to be one of the largest batteries in Southeast Europe, Đedović Handanović concluded.
