Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović announced today that the government has submitted a new request to the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), supporting oil company Naftna Industrija Srbije’s (NIS) request for an extension of its current operating licence, set to expire on 29 July, by another 180 days.

Đedović Handanović emphasised that over the past month, as well as throughout the entire period since January, when US sanctions against NIS were first announced, the state has consistently defended the position that imposing sanctions would be highly detrimental to the energy security of Serbia and the region, as they would cause significant negative consequences for the country, its citizens and economy, as well as for the entire region.
Serbia has done nothing to warrant these sanctions, and the state has once again presented all the facts to the US administration, including all potential negative effects and the measures being taken to ensure that NIS complies with the conditions related to Gazprom Neft’s ownership, she explained.
In her view, extending the licence for the requested 180-day period would contribute to the procurement of crude oil for the Pančevo refinery and support the energy stability of the country and the region.
The Government of Serbia remains committed to securing a permanent and sustainable solution for NIS, in cooperation with its US and Russian partners, the Minister said, expressing gratitude to the Government of Hungary for its continued support in finding a long-term solution for NIS.
