Strengthening capacity to detect, treat consequences of coronavirus

Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begovic attended today the handover of equipment for medical analysis, which was presented to the Institute for Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering in Belgrade by Ambassador of the United States to Serbia Christopher Hill and Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Serbia Jakup Beris.

The donation includes four devices for research and analysis of human and viral genomes and a digital PCR system that more accurately measures the number of viral particles in samples.

This will enable accurate diagnosis and determination of adequate therapy for patients with COVID-19 and other infections, early recognition of high-risk patients in need of hospital care and mapping of particularly sensitive individuals based on genetic markers, as well as faster development of new, innovative therapies and vaccines.

This donation is worth $605,000, and the mentioned equipment will help the institute to strengthen Serbia's capacities for detecting, treating and mitigating the consequences of the coronavirus, as well as other diseases and infections.

The donation is part of the $2.75 million "Together Against COVID" project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and implemented by the UNDP in partnership with the government of the Republic of Serbia.
