With the Birmingham title, Sharapova captured her the third win in a row on grass. Jankovic, meanwhile, playing on a grass for the first time this season, has justified her placement in the World Tennis Association’s (WTA) top rankings.
Sharapova was better in the first set, announcing prior to the match that she would continue her 17-match win streak on grass.
Jankovic outplayed her competitor in the second set taking it six games to four, but was hampered by a left thigh strain that required treatment at the start of the third set.
Sharapova in turn dominated the third set, losing just one game on her way to winning the title.
Jelena Jankovic came to Birmingham as the world’s 20th ranked player, leaving one position higher after her performance this weekend.
