The 17-year-old from Serbia and Montenegro proved she has the nerve for the big stage. Ivanovic won the first set 6-4 and held two break points at 15-40 on Mauresmo's serve for a 4-1 lead in the second set. But the 25-year-old Frenchwoman made a run of five consecutive games to take the set 6-3 and force a decider.
Two double faults allowed Ivanovic, who is playing at Roland Garros for the first time, to break for a 3-1 lead.
Mauresmo broke straight back, but Ivanovic came out strongly after a brief medical break and her French opponent tightened up to hand her the victory.
The match ended with Mauresmo double faulting to hand Ivanovic the biggest victory of her short career.
