“Our glorious heroes fought together against fascism. They won the most magnificent victory of the 20th century. May the Russian and Serbian friendship last through the centuries to come,” wrote President Tadic.
Tadic and Medvedev talked with those who fought to liberate Belgrade during the Second World War.
Wreaths were laid also by Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas and a delegation of war veterans.
The ceremony was also attended by Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic, Serbian ministers Dragan Sutanovac, Vuk Jeremic and Rasim Ljajic, Belgrade City Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Antic, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Konuzin and members of the Russian state delegation.
The Memorial Graveyard became the final resting place of 961 members of the Red Army and 2,994 members of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia who gave their lives fighting for the liberation of Belgrade in October 1944.
