Director of the Serbian Office of Statistics Dragan Vukmirovic said today that according to the recent census of population, households and dwellings, there are 7,120,666 inhabitants in Serbia, which is 377,335 or 5% less than in the 2002 census.

Vukmirovic said at a press conference at which the first results of the census were presented that such a result was expected, giving as the main reasons for the decline in population the negative natural growth, migration and the fact that ethnic Albanians in three municipalities in southern Serbia - Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, boycotted the census.
Vukmirovic noted that the largest decline in population is recorded in eastern Serbia, while the growth was registered only in the Belgrade region.
Vukmirovic said that the total number of households is 2,497,187, which is significantly less than in 2002, when the number was 2,521,190.
Detailed information on the census will be released successively until mid next year, when data on ethnic composition, religion and mother tongue will be available.
